Description

The rapid expansion of digital technologies and social media platforms has significantly influenced the lives of young people, particularly girl students. While digital spaces offer opportunities for learning, communication, and self-expression, they also expose young women to cyberbullying, online harassment, body shaming, social comparison, and social exclusion. These experiences can have serious consequences for mental health, contributing to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, stress, and feelings of loneliness. Despite the growing prevalence of mental health challenges among students, stigma remains a major barrier to seeking help and accessing support services. Mental health stigma in digital spaces is often reinforced through negative stereotypes, discriminatory attitudes, misinformation, and victim-blaming practices. This chapter examines the nature and forms of mental health stigma experienced by girl students in online environments. It explores the impact of cyberbullying, appearance-related pressures, and gender-based discrimination on psychological well-being. The chapter also highlights the positive role of social media in promoting mental health awareness, peer support, and advocacy initiatives aimed at reducing stigma. Drawing upon existing literature and theoretical perspectives, the chapter emphasizes the need for mental health education, digital literacy, supportive institutional policies, and safe online communities. It argues that collaborative efforts by educators, parents, policymakers, mental health professionals, and technology companies are essential for creating inclusive digital environments that promote the mental well-being and empowerment of girl students in the digital age.
